"In the burgomasters' room, above the mantelpiece, on the side of treasury, by Govaert Flinck , 1500 guilders." - Contract, 1655
During the year he spent as one of REMBRANDT's students in the 1630s, Flinck mastered his teacher's technique so that some of his paintings were sold as authentic "Rembrandts." In the 1640s he abandoned the master's manner for a lighter and more fashionable style. He became very popular, and acquired commissions from the ruling class that escaped (or were not sought by) Rembrandt. Indeed, Flinck attracted more patronage, especially for portraits, than did any of his Amsterdam contemporaries. In 1656 he received the most im portant commission awarded to any Dutch pa inter of the 17th century-a series of 12 paintings for the new town hall, described in the quotation above. Their subject was the revolt led by Julius Civilis, leader of the Batavians (ancestors of the Dutch people), against the ruling Romans. This battle was seen as a metaphor for the recent War of Independence against Spain. Rembrandt was given only one of the pictures in the project (which was divided among a group of artists that included BOL and LIEVENS). Flinck died before he could execute his commission.
