"[Dou} filled his house in Amsterdam with almost countless distinguished children for instruction and learning." - Joachim von Sandrart, 1675
As a boy of 14, Dou was REMBRANDT's first student in Leiden and probably stayed with him until Rembrandt left for Amsterdam. Then Dou started his own school in Leiden, and became a fashionable and highly successful artist. Later, he too left for Amsterdam, where he continued teaching, according to his contemporary SANDRART, quoted above. Dou was a painter of everyday, GENRE scenes, highly detailed and with an enamel-like finish. Some had moralizing themes, such as women's virtues or, as in the case of The Evening School (before 1665), a work he painted as a student of Rembrandt, an educational theme. Seated at a table with his pupils, the teacher sharpens his pen by candlelight- this allegorical picture is on the subject of keeping one's skills honed. The candlelight symbolizes enlightenment in the education of children. Small, candlelit scenes became a specialty of Dou in his later years.
