"Every picture shows a spot with which the artist himself has fallen in love." - Sisley
Born in France to English parents, Sisley studied at the studio of GLEYRE with MONET, BAZILLE, and RENOIR. He was painting at BARBIZON in 1861, and was a close friend and frequent companion of Renoir. Both men painted at Bazille's studio. Monet was a strong influence and may have persuaded Sisley to devote himself to landscape painting. It is said that Sisley never quite broke out of Monet's orbit, but he worked there as an admirer, not an imitator. The differences between their paintings are best understood by the effects they have on a viewer. Whereas a landscape of Sisley's will transmit that feeling of the artist having fallen in love with at least some part of the scene, as he says in the comment above, a Monet landscape has a more detached and overall effect. Speaking about the sky, Sisley makes an interesting point: "Not only does it give the picture depth through its successive planes (for the sky, like the ground, has its planes), but through its form and through its relations with the whole effect . . . . I emphasize this part of landscape because I would like to make you understand the importance I attach to it." In the painting Chestnut Trees at La Celle-Saint-Cloud (1865), although the sky is barely one-eighth of the picture, the sense of depth Sisley bestows on it is as complex as that of the rocks, ground, and trees below.
