Brief Introduction of Claude Oscar Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926), born in Paris, is a famous French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionism movement. In 1856, he met his mentor and began to learn techniques of oil paintings. In 1862 Monet became a student of Charles Gleyre in Paris. In there, he met Auguste Renoir, Frederic Bazille and Alfred Sisley. Monet and his fellow Impressionists didn’t follow the traditional academic style of painting, which focused on careful draftsmanship and realistic representation. Instead, they sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere in their artworks. They often painted outdoors (en plein air) and used loose, broken brushstrokes in their paintings to create a sense of movement and immediacy.
Painting Style
Monet has been described as "the driving force behind Impressionism". Crucial to the art of the Impressionist painters was the understanding of the effects of light on the local colour of objects, and the effects of the juxtaposition of colors with each other. His long career as a painter was spent in the pursuit of this aim. Monet’s oil paintings set the stage for a sweeping change in French art. Monet worked with real-world imagery and made great efforts to represent the impression of the images instead of the reality. Simple scenes of haystacks or trees are painted with broad, sweeping brushstrokes that create mood rather than realism. His style of oil paintings creates a feeling of the scene instead of simply reproducing. Water Lily Pond is one of Monet’s more realistic oil paintings. The forms and objects are recognizable and the stylistic approach to color and texture strengthens to the recognizable scene.
