"Time should be divided over a long period in such a way that there should be enough for painting and work for the theatre- these are, of course, inseparable, but painting is an inner necessity for theatrical work, and not vice versa." - Natalia Goncharova
In 1871 the Russian Academy of Arts was opened to women, and during the next decade art schools were establisbed in major cities and attracted female students. Goncharova began her studies in .Moscow in 1892, and in 1906 her work was included in Diaghilev's WORLD OF ART exhibition. She was rebellious in behavior as well as ideas, masquerading and posturing: She made several public appearances barebreasted with abstract designs painted on her body. With LARIONOV, whom she married, and others, Goncharova pursued an interest in native Russian arts and crafts, especially the bright colors of peasant art, fabrics, and ICONs, a field plowed by VRUBEL and cultivated for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Goncharova's Haycutting (1910) is an example of her interest in Russian peasant life. She and Larionov went to Paris in 1915 and worked on designs for Diaghilev. She made wooden dolls, puppets, and marionettes, often drawn from Russian mythology. But other impulses and explorations also ran through her career. In 1913, for example, she painted a picture that combined analytical CUBISM and speed-obsessed FUTURISM, Aeroplane over Train. During the last decades of her life Goncharova painted images inspired by the exploration of space. After the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, she produced a series of paintings on the theme of the cosmos that were exhibited in Paris in 1958.
