"[My portrait is] . .. out of the hand of Mr. Levinus, the Duke of Brandenburg's paynter. He duelt at the signe of the fleur-de-luce and you may be sure of a good one. He ist the better because he hath so high conceit of himself that he thinks here is none to be compared with him in all Germany-Holland, nor the rest of the 17 provinces." - Robert Kerr, Earl of Ancram, 1654
His artistic training began at the age of 8; before he was 11, Lievens was studying with Pieter LASTMANin Amsterdam; and by 13 he was working on his own in Leiden. Lievens became a friend of REMBRANDT when the latter began his apprenticeship in Leiden. They developed along different lines; Lievens was less interested in psychology than he was in melodrama and was also inclined to a larger scale; however, a number of works attributed to Rembrandt were probably by Lievens. The two parted in the early 1630 s, and while he received commissions for allegorical subjects, HISTORY PAINTINGS, and portraits, as the quotation above illustrates, Lievens's contribution to the history of art is relatively slight.
