"I look back on my life like a good day's work . ... I knew nothing better and made the best of what life offered. And life is what we make of it. Always has been, always will be." - Anna Mary Robertson 'Grandma' Moses
Grandma Moses did not begin painting pictures until she was in her early 70s. She exhibited her work at country fairs MOTHERWELL, ROBERT 461 along with her canned preserves. Her scenes of rural life-little cube houses, little figures, small-town activities in winter (e.g., Hoosick Falls in Winter, 1944) and in summer, all imbued with a sense of joy-were soon discovered by collectors in the late 1930s. Her expression of life's simple pleasures has made her one of America's best-known and best-loved artists.
